Bob Simon, a long-time correspondent for the `60 Minutes' current affairs program was killed in a car accident on the West Side Highway in Manhattan, New York on Wednesday night around 7 p.m.

According to New York City police, the 73-year-old was a passenger in a livery cab travelling southbound on 12th Avenue when the town car slammed into the driver's side of a Mercedes-Benz that had stopped at a red light. It then careened into metal poles on the median separating north and southbound traffic.

Emergency responders cut open the top of the car with a hydraulic tool and found Simon unconscious and unresponsive with injuries to his head and torso.

Simon was pronounced dead on arrival at Saint Luke's Roosevelt Hospital. The driver is in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital with injuries to his arms and legs. The driver of the Mercedes sustained no injuries.

Police have not yet made any arrests and are investigating the cause of the crash. According to a police source, the driver may have suffered from a heart attack, though it is not yet clear whether he actually suffered a heart attack or not.

"He swerved into me," said the 23-year-old driver of the Mercedes to New York Post "He hit me and he looked like he lost control of the car."

The award-winning journalist was a long time member of CBS's `60 Minutes', and his career as a newsman spanned over five decades, with 27 Emmy Awards for reporting. He is survived by his wife, Françoise, and daughter, Tanya, a producer for the program.
